Austin, Texas — The Austin Police Department released body cam and dash cam footage of a June 12th police shooting that that left one man dead in North Austin. Four APD officers, Spencer Bradley, John Zavala, Dennis Kerlin and Lonnie Cannon, were involved in the incident. Officer Zavala and Kerlin shot the man, who was identified as 42-year-old Carlos Eli Chacon-Castillo. The incident began when an officer saw a disabled vehicle on the side of the road near the 800 block of E. Koenig Lane with an occupant inside. The officer said that Chacon Castillo had a knife, so additional officers were called to respond. Austin police said Chacon Castillo appeared to be agitated, and he would not put the knife down.

Chacon Castillo then shouted at the officers “just shoot me.” Officers continued to deescalate the situation when Chacon Castillo advanced toward the officers. One officer deployed a less-lethal firearm at Chacon Castillo, but it was ineffective. The advances continued, and two other officers fired their APD-issued guns and shot Chacon Castillo. Once the officers could determine that Chacon Castillo no longer had the knife and didn’t post a threat, officers attempted life-saving measures until EMS medics arrived on the scene and took him to the hospital. Around 1:09 p.m., Chacon Castillo succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

  1. The wall would have saved his life. Didn't find the paradise he was promised by the cartel after giving them everything he had, and chose suicide by cop.

  2. I don't MMQB often, if ever, but second cop needs to rewatch this multiple times and learn from it. Crossfire, mag dumping without reload…he has zero clue he's out until he goes to fire, at which point he's already screwed had it not been for everyone else involved. Scary stuff man..

  3. Poor police work:

    1) Not blocking traffic letting all the cars drive by the knife criminal intent on killing people.
    2) Brutal cross fire coverage as the less lethal officer was almost killed by his coworker during the second charge.
    3) No mag reload after first salvo.

Gutsy and courageous second charge by the criminal. 👍

  4. My dad's friend, who is a retired Pomona LEO, said that he had gotten into a confrontation with a man on PCP during a traffic stop. And he had to be detained with over 5 officers because he kept going apeshit. He was transported to a hospital in strong restraints and the guy fucking broke right through it with ease.

Safe to say PCP is one hell of a drug.

  5. That second body cam footage showing an officer covering the subject with an empty weapon!! What’s that all about??

  6. Also want to note that this happened at 12:20pm and he died at 1:09pm. That mofo was on PCP. It took him nearly an hour to succumb to 495 shots.

  7. There was a time in my community when someone covered in tattoos was presumed to be the thug and had disqualified himself from being a police officer. The local agency wouldn't interview anyone covered in ink. How times change…

  8. So surprised they were allowing cars to go through. Had they needed to shoot early on, there could have been a stray here or there.

  9. Cop who shot first 1. Needs to attend the range 2. Bit more situational awareness (standing in crossfire) 3. Equipment awareness ie reload (assuming the fight is immediately over)

  10. Glad to see this animal be put down! For those that cry for Law Enforcement to shoot these animals in the leg to stop an animal….. Yeah this animal stood back up after being shot many times, shooting it in the leg would have done nothing!
