San Diego, California — The San Diego Police Department on Wednesday released video footage of an officer-involved shooting that took place Sunday in the sally port of SDPD headquarters located in the downtown area. SDPD officers shot and wounded 25-year-old Keith Bergman after they said he slipped handcuffs and grabbed an officer’s backup gun firing at least one round. At about 6:20pm, a 911 call came in from a downtown hotel about a man causing a disturbance. He had been pepper sprayed and held down by hotel security for threatening to stab hotel staff. San diego police officers responded and took the 25-year old man into custody without incident. The man was evaluated for being under the influence and placed under arrest.

A search of his pockets revealed methamphetamine and five credit cards that did not belong to him. He was taken to police headquarters for processing. While sitting in the back of a patrol car in the sally port, he slipped one hand free from his handcuffs. He then broke through a plexiglass barrier, reached into the rear area of the car, and grabbed a backpack that contained an officer’s back-up handgun. The security camera video shows the beginning of the incident when the man is alone in the car. An officer, hearing the commotion, opens the door to discover the man is free of his handcuffs. As other officers approach the car, they see that he is holding a handgun. They draw their service weapons and attempt to persuade him to drop the gun with no success. Officers back up in an effort to de-escalate and continue to give the order to surrender.

The man fires a round out of the back of the patrol car. A security camera catches flying debris as the bullet penetrates the rear glass. That portion has been highlighted in the video. After several minutes, the man reaches through the broken glass and opens the rear door. He exits with the backpack and the handgun tucked in his waist. He tries and fails to open the rear hatch. The man then tries to open the driver door and an officer fires three rounds. The man tries again and a fourth round is fired. A k-9 was deployed and the man was taken into custody. Once the handgun was secured, officers immediately began first aid until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injures.

  1. I don’t understand how all of this is happening inside a cop car? Like how is the suspect armed and in the back of the cop car?

  2. The way he walks nonchalantly into the driverside…
I've never seen someone in such a state of shock still being able to walk around.

  3. …So far I read about 30 comments…didn't bother to go further…maybe someone below the 30 comments…would agree or thought the same…Questions from myself…1. what was he arrested for,2.procedure…when taken into custody/arrested…handcuffed and searched/bodily b4 being put into police vehicle?and from what I can see……should I comment further….?Greetings from S.A.🇿🇦❤Stay safe and God Bless All….

  4. Entirely the officers fault . They left a man in the back of a car with a loaded firearm then are surprised when he picks it up 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️

  5. I don't like the phrase "don't reach your gun", it's too triggering as a proposition…

We have to treat people with suppositories, not with bullets…

  6. big badass, the guy comes off the handcuffs, grabs a gun, escapes from the vehicle with a bag on his back and a gun visible at the waist, he better apply to MI6!

  7. This video is an embarrassment to this police station 😂😂 how tf y’all let a guy have a gun in your own station… San Diego gotta do better

  8. Never underestimate meth head's dedication to steal people's property. Even after shot down he tried to take the car!
