Akron, Ohio — The Akron Police Department released body camera videos of Officer John Turnure during a Feb. 7, 2021 arrest that prompted an internal investigation into use-of-force. The officer, John Turnure, submitted his resignation of March 30 in the middle of the investigation. The police union cited personal and professional reasons, not the incident in February, in explaining why Turnure was leaving. Acting Chief Mike Caprez described the video of the arrest as “textbook,” saying officers did everything right until Officer John Turnure appears to shove snow into the suspect’s mouth. The suspect, 26-year-old Charles Hicks and his attorney told that the police used excessive force, but Akron police said they released the video to avoid the community jumping to conclusions based on bad information.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. on Feb. 7, after Hicks’ girlfriend called 911 to report that Hicks threatened her with a knife and that she was scared for the safety of her children in the home on Vernon Odom Drive in West Akron, according to police documents released. She claimed Hicks was hitting people and threatening them with knives and guns. Body-cam footage shows Hicks standing on the front porch, accusing officers of being disrespectful and asserting that he is not “13,” which Caprez said means a “prisoner” or “under arrest.” The video shows officers struggling to arrest Hicks, who they describe as very muscular. Hicks claims an officer put his knee on his neck, but the acting chief said from what he saw in the video, officers pinned him down as they were trained. Police officials said Officer Turnure was out of line when he could be seen putting snow in Hicks’ mouth. Turnure resigned before the internal investigation was complete. Police did not give more details about his resignation.

  1. Eso es abuso de la fuerza , ya lo tenían en el suelo que necesidad intentar asfixiarlo con la nieve . Eso no son policías son unos posibles matones .

  2. My God. I could NEVER be a cop. This dude is beyond so damn annoying, I'd put more then just snow in his mouth. 🤬

  3. As soon as the officer told the other officer to get off the steps, he lost all his confidence during the entire video.

  4. And I bet nothing happened about that 🤦🏾‍♂️ police be on the most bullshit we need to start killing they kids then maybe they’ll start thinking twice about fkn with ppl

  5. Actually this is police procedure. If he resists, then they have every right to use brute force to put him under arrest.

  6. And do these cops care!? Not at all!
They will always get away with it!

When they get fired, they will just be hired by the county nextdoor!
Cops are really above the law. And they can keep doing their racial bias thing.

  7. I can't believe most of the comments here….None of these videos are funny, not every black person cries wolf. We have sense enough to know that every cop isn't bad so these ridiculous jokes are just ignorance. The cops had a job to do… purposely shoving snow down someone's throat is not in the job description. There were enough officer's there to control the situation and get him cuffed. It's the extra slick crap that pisses me off. The guy resisted and went to jail, but what's going to happen to the officer who assaulted him while he was down and cuffed??? I'm so sick of this racist shit. There's not a person on this earth that's better than the next. We should all take a long hard look at ourselves in the mirror. I sincerely doubt that this would have been funny if this was a white man being disrespected like this by a black man. I get that we have freedom of speech, just remember that when it's your son/daughter, mother/father or loved one on the ground yelling I CAN'T BREATHE!
