Evansville, Indiana —

The video also include police chief press briefing.

Police chief statement: “Unfortunately, a news story posted online quoted a single witness who gave a version that has been debunked by multiple other witnesses and body cam footage. The story was posted several minutes before schedule EPD press conference where the below details were released. The narrative included in the news story was addressed in our press conference and was characterized as false.

Man Armed With Hammer Shot by Officer—

On Monday, October 28, 2019 at 6:28 p.m., an EPD Officer was dispatched to what many would consider a routine call for service – a response to a traffic collision.

A witness to the crash stopped to see if they could render assistance to the driver involved in the collision.

Within two minutes, an officer arrived and was met by the original witness to the crash as well as two other witnesses. One of the witnesses told our officer that he believed that the driver of the vehicle appeared to be under the influence of some substance.

Our officer approached the wrecked vehicle and found the driver, who has been identified as 45 year-old Terry Wayne Chanley.

Chanley was sitting in the vehicle with his door open and appeared to be intoxicated by his appearance and mannerisms.

Our officer asked Chanley for his driver`s license and registration and he just shook his head and began reaching underneath his seat

Chanley was given verbal commands to stop reaching for items, which he ignored. Because Chanley continued to reach for items in a suspicious manner disregarding the officer’s orders, the officer backed away in order to give him some distance from Chanley and drew his weapon.

The officer continued to shout commands, telling Chanley to show his hands. Chanley then grabbed an object appeared to be black, pointed it at the officer and began to move toward him in an aggressive manner.

At this point, our officer believing that Chanley was armed with a gun and posed an immediate threat to himself and the witnesses that were behind the officer fired his handgun at Chanley.

Our officer began to back away from Chanley while still issuing commands and Chanley continued to advance on the officer in an aggressive manner. Fearing for his own safety and the safety of the witnesses, our officer fired at Chanley again.

Chanley still continued to advance on the officer fired a third and final time in order to stop the immediate threat to his life.
The EPD believes that our officer acted and performed his duties in a legal, justified, and reasonable manner, taking action to protect members of the public as well as himself from serious injury or harm

I understand that due to the nature of this case and the amount of attention that it has garnered, there is more information that people want to know.

Please understand that this investigation is still fluid and evolving and that we will share additional information as long as it does not compromise the investigation.”

  1. Sorry but they need to do better psych screening on these cops. If he is that screwed up for saving his and probably other lives then he needs a different job. There is NO ONE who signs up for that job that doesn't know what they are signing up for. The chances are 95% you will be in a shooting these days if you are an active patrol cop. He need to get out of that job.

  2. I can't imagine feeling bad for shooting someone that would no problem hurting me. All dude had to do was NOT reach for a potentially deadly weapon.

  3. One second you are laughing and the next second you are taking a suspect’s life.
    Shit is horrible.
Sad when a drunk person makes a poor choice that ends their life.
Drinking has only a few emotions…
Angry, Emotional, and Violent to name a few
None of which help you whatsoever.

  4. It sucks the emotional strain it puts on someone to have to kill a person and it sucks that when we do have to protect ourselves were left with the what ifs, the what ifs of what i could have done to prevent it or could i have chose a more less lethal shot. I appreciate all those who spend their time protecting those who can't its a noble sacrifice but it dosen't come without mental strain. Prayers to the officer hopefully keeping his shit together to get the job done and i hope he got the help he needs…

  5. It is a damn shame how reporters ask questions in a way to make something out of nothing. Dumbest breed of people on the planet.

  6. Oh my God talk about sounding like a bitch what kind of police officer is that I would have had him fired just for acting that way oh my God

  7. That's some audio that cop will never live down…not if he lives forever…🤣. Then shoots a injured and disoriented guy with a hammer?

  8. That cop panicked, understandable, but none the less lacks the nerve and professionalism for respect of life. The cop knows and the suspect knows the cop has deadly force. With proper training and techniques deadly force can be avoided.
I'd never want harm to come to a police officer for doing his job. But the system clearly states "innocent until proven guilty " the duty of a police officer is to go above and beyond to preserve peace and life. Not to feel threatened and start shooting.
In his voice it clearly describes he was afraid for his life. Our community can't use that as a defense against an officer knowing they actually do have capability to kill them.
Police officers need to be vetted and trained much better and accept the inevitable possible consequences of being a police officer. Otherwise anyone can pull a trigger and call it law enforcement and justice.

  9. Good press briefing. That was a good Sgt who obviously supports his subordinates. It was an awesome thing to hear the police officers point of view explained so well. Obviously well trained and experienced and the Evansville PD obviously has great command attention focused on public information and transparency. I hope the officer involved gets a lot of respect and care and concern from his fellow officers.

  10. I know that was super traumatic for the officer. I am sorry that the idiot left him no choice. The police have a really tuff job and have to make extremely hard decisions. They need our support and respect. I hope that the officer gets council and can carry on with a normal life and career.

  11. Someone is in the wrong line of work and not saying killing someone but it’s expected here. Maybe Walmart greeter. Just saying.

  12. This gave me goosebumps. Heart goes out to that cop, he handled himself in the best way and defended his life and the lives of those around him. Thank you for your service 🙏🏻
