SUGARCREEK, Ohio — The Sugarcreek Police Department — A Sugarcreek Police Officer is recovering in an Akron hospital after being stabbed by a man during a traffic stop.
After being stabbed, 37-year-old Police Captain Brian Dalton shot and killed the male suspect. The incident took place around 10 a.m. Wednesday near TMK Farm Service in Tuscarawas County.
The motorist had reportedly driven through a no-trucks zone, damaging property. He allegedly stabbed Dalton in the neck with a screwdriver after the being told he would need to appear in court on a property damaging charge.
Police have identified the deceased male as Elijah Collins III, 32-years-old truck driver from High Point, N.C
Collins died of a gun shot injury according to the Tuscarawas Office of the Coroner. Dr. Cameron has released the name of the decedent involved in the incident in Sugarcreek.
Collins had a criminal record in his home state. He had most recently been sentenced to 23 to 37 months in prison for a felonious assault that broke a woman’s nose and eye socket.
Court records say he attacked her with a deadly weapon, his fists, on Nov. 12, 2009.
In addition to the prison sentence, the North Carolina judge ordered the defendant to be assessed for substance abuse and to complete anger management treatment.
North Carolina court records show Collins had previously been put on probation for three misdemeanor drug charges in 2004 when he was 17. The cases involved drug possession, manufacture and paraphernalia.
