Albuquerque Police – Shootings of Officer Mike King and Richard Smith Chief’s Memorial Run

A cross town shooting rampage horrified people across Albuquerque. Diagnosed schizophrenic John Hyde killed five people … including two police officers Micheal (Mike) King and Richard Smith who went to his home to pick him up for a mental evaluation. What officers Smith and King didn’t know… was that Hyde had already gunned down d-o-t worker Benny Lopez. He also killed motorcycle shop workers David Fisher and Garrett Iverson earlier that day.

The Chief’s Memorial Run has been done since 2005 for each graduating class of The Albuquerque Police Academy.

Participating in the run from The Albuquerque Police Department is Ray Schultz Chief of Police, Allen Banks Deputy Chief of Police, Paul Feist Deputy Chief of Police, Steve Warfield, Deputy Chief of Police, APD Commanders, and the training Academy staff who run from the UNM Duckpond to the corner of Ash and Gold where Officer Mike King and Officer Richard Smith were shot and killed.

Police Officers Mike King and Richard Smith were gun down on August 18, 2005.
