A Narcan Nightmare in Appleton

A message from the Chief of Police:

Statement from Chief Thomas regarding the Valley Transit incident that occurred May 15, 2019.

This tragedy has forever changed the lives of many people, most importantly those of the Lundgaard family. We know there is nothing any of us can do to take away the pain this has caused, but as a community we can continue to support them and stay committed to responding to this the way that Mitch would want us to.

The body camera videos we will release will allow you to see and feel how this incident developed, and it puts you in the shoes of the officers involved. They are very intense and difficult videos to watch. But there is also a video that shows the exact moment that officers working the scene learned that Mitch had died. It is heart-wrenching and painful to watch; but the officer’s actions after that also demonstrates what is meant when you hear those words, The Thin Blue Line, or The Thin Red Line. On the video you see the immediate shock they feel, how everyone takes a breath and pauses for a couple seconds, and then how they jump right back into getting things done and working the investigation. That is what your officers and firefighters do every day. I could not be prouder of how both our departments responded to this.

As we continue to heal from this, what have we learned about our community?

Obviously this was an anomaly for our community, or for any community, and this could have happened anywhere on the bus route from Milwaukee to Wausau. This was a criminal traveling through our community, who had a long history of illegal and dangerous behavior. His actions were pure evil, plain and simple.

But, it is the actions of those first responders, and how this community supported us, which reaffirms everything we already know about Appleton; and that is what will truly be the final word in this tragedy.

Todd L. Thomas
Chief of Police

  1. ur totally right, it is not a solution! after they get narcam there needs to be a consequence! most people wld think that a near death experience wld b enough for someone to quit using drugs, but that’s not what happens!

  2. That wouldn't of happened if the cop didn't push the hospital issue. People have the right to refuse medical treatment

  3. Yes, sadly. I heard about this sadly… my dad is the Lieutenant for the Oshkosh department and… god. I'm happy this never took place in Oshkosh, but it never should of happened anywhere. A few of my dad's friends attended the funeral of the firefighter.. 😢

  4. I get that people get crazy after narcan, puts you in immediate withdrawal. There's no reason a simple injection or now even an inhaler is doing someone else's job… Is saving people's lives not part of firefighters or police officers jobs? Even if I take the side you say (I don't, but let's just say), you'd rather have a paramedic give narcan because…. They are more qualified to deal with someone waking up violent…? Also, no, narcan is not a solution, but addiction is a disease, it's a preventable disease, but a disease that is extremely hard to overcome. I'm glad you were never cursed with it, but at the same time, you'd rather just potentially let someone die because you feel giving narcan "isn't your job…"

  5. Gods speed my friend. I have no knowledge of narcan other than you give it to people that have overdosed. But why is thrre a discussion about first responder safety? Sounds political, which makes it sound stupid.

  6. Oh I have seen the entire video on other channel. I remember asking: they were for nearly one hour tending to him, how is that he HAD A GUN. It's always sad 😔

  7. when you get the time, you should do a video with Demolition Ranch. Put him through some of these paces. not the narcan, but he's relatively fit, so grappling on the ground would be a fantastic thing to see.

  8. I know the best solution…..ban Narcan! If someone is dumb enough to use drugs in the 1st place then they should prepare to pay the piper. Police and fire should not have that on their shoulders. Thank you to all our 1st responders.
