Nevada Highway Patrol’s fastest-speed speeding ticket for the year 2019 was handed to Aaron Snyder of Henderson, Nevada late at night on June 16, a bit over a year ago. At the time, Snyder was wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the word “THRILLS.” How appropriate.

If you have been watching Real World Police lately – and, come on, we both know you have – you might remember Deputy Sheriff Felipe Perez. He was the guy who thought – incorrectly, on that occasion – that his badge would summarily excuse a 134 MPH run in his Hellcat. While his child was in the backseat. Mr. Sheriff Perez had also neglected to put license plates on his car. Perez was cited for 134 MPH.

Depending on how closely you paid attention to the Perez video, you might also be aware that the Deputy’s charge was amended downward. Significantly. What began as “Speeding 41+ MPH Over Posted Speed Limit” ended up as a parking ticket.

But there was more to the story. Our investigation found that Deputy Perez did not get special treatment in having his super-high-speed-speeding-ticket turned into a no-speed-at-all parking ticket. That’s the norm. As long as you actually show up or even phone the Justice Court, you, too, can get just about any Nevada Highway Patrol speeding ticket amended to a non-moving violation.

The catch? Only the crime changes. Your fine — which is technically a “bail forfeiture,” since moving violations in Nevada are criminal offenses — stays the same. Which is why Deputy Perez’s parking ticket cost him a cool $706, plus the time and expense of traffic school.

Aaron Snyder’s 155 MPH encounter with the highway patrol earned him the belt as ‘fastest-speed speeder [caught by NHP] in 2019, but – despite the obvious moving violation, Snyder’s citation was amended much the same as Perez’s: it turned into a parking ticket. In fact, Snyder came out ahead of Perez in his wallet and on his speedometer. Snyder was given a mandatory court date, and the court determined that an appropriate penalty was $255. Total.

Some might point out that he hired an attorney. It is not clear, however, that the attorney made any difference beyond Snyder not having to personally show up in court.

Notes:

(a) Although Snyder was ‘only’ cited for 98 MPH, the citation also reads “Actual Speed: 154 MPH.” In the video, however, Trooper Provost states many times that he clocked Snyder at 155. Those claims notwithstanding, the citation’s brief narrative states that the radar-clocked speed was 153 MPH. I don’t know the reason for the discrepancies.

(b) On October 1, 2019, Nevada Assembly Bill 434 went into effect, reforming – a bit – the state’s approach to traffic violations. The new law states that for someone arrested for a violation of Nevada’s traffic laws, “…there is a presumption that the person should be released on his or her own recognizance.” This presumption doesn’t apply to arrests for reckless driving, vehicular manslaughter, DUI; or if the person willfully refuses to pay court-imposed obligations and refuses to perform community service to satisfy a court-imposed obligation; or if the court finds that releasing the person “…would substantially jeopardize public safety.”

  5. I once had a car going about 150+ miss me by inches. I was going about 55mph and just about to merge to my left when this car flew by me and disappeared in a matter of seconds. It could've easily ended my life if I decided to merge left a second earlier. He came up so quick I literally did not see him the first time I checked to change lanes. Didn't really see him till he flew past me. I'm not one to jump easily, but hearing and feeling that car fly by me that fast made me jump. He came out of nowhere. That speed is insanely fast. Hard for people to imagine if they haven't experienced it. I'm just glad no one was hurt.

  7. Man, I've been treated MUCH worse by cops for going 80mph in a 65. This dude does 155 and the cop is like "Gee there friend, that was impressive. Anyway, here's a slap on the wrist, and yer free ta go!" What a wacky world.

  12. Its actually a total injustice that this guy was allowed to drive home. 155????? Thats INSANE and they had an open container and marijuana in the car? No! ? People get in worse trouble for way less, and I guarantee you this child did NOT learn his lesson from this encounter! Why on Earth would u let him off so easy going 155!?!?!?!?!?!?!! Thats 55 over 100?! Officer did him wrong too because he could hurt himself or someone else speeding cuz he didnt get hardly any consequences

  16. They were coming from his house, meaning she would’ve had to pick him up, probably meaning that the girls parents weren’t home but the guy didn’t have a car

  17. "it was on the passenger's side so i think it's hers" wow okay. no one can move a container in a car when they're driving, got it. so if i drive around with an open container but it's on the passenger's side, i'm golden. abolish the police.

I was once pulled over for doing 33 on a 25, you would of thought that I told the cop off or mention his mother no I was very respectful and he had a real bad attitude, I was literally afraid for my life and I don't do pot or ever owned a firearm I don't drink either, yet I got attitude basically called stupid to my face and hit with a 160 dollar ticket for going 8 miles over, but tben again Jersey City. NJ are not known for their kindness this guy had an attitude from the beginning, he was being a total asshole

  30. Ticket can will be thrown out if challenged for inaccuracies. The ticket states driver is operating a Dodge Journey which is an SUV clearly he driving a Dodge Charger.

    But hey he still got away.

    I can confirm this from a ticket I received in 2014 rented a Challenger SRT in Oregon with a very similar situation lol.

  34. I got pulled diver doing 115mph. Cop just chewed me the fuck out amd gave me a ticket for 85 in a 65. I was extremely honest and respectful to the officer. Gets you a long way

  37. At ~7:50 I considered this exchange innappropriate. The cop is moderately entertained, and the two of them exchange laughs.

    As far as preventing this guy from doing this in the future, That was the wrong approach.

  38. I watch a chase in Cali, that lasted 3 hours, A Dodge 707 horse left ever police car and hoppers in the dust . They only caught him because he stop and ran on foot!( Out of gas)
