  1. First thing I will say is that Hermosa Beach police is probably the best police department that I have encountered for First Amendment filming the police.  Secondly, Sgt. Cahalan is one of those good cops that are hard to find.   Even when he has a stabbing suspect at gun point he is cool under pressure and doesn't say a thing to me or Dan to move back or anything else.   He answered all of our questions and did his job at the same time.  Everyone benefits  when police and press do their respective jobs and respect each other.

  2. Im discovering more and more horrible things that happen around my hometown and im not sure how to feel about it. Either way, fantastic journalism, Katman.

  3. I know you're probably going to disagree with this, because you would've been sent very far away to film but being that the man was stabbed in the neck, it's not only a 245, it's an attempt 187 and might turn out to have been an actual 187.

Right when they got code 4 with the man behind the wall, they should've brought out the crime tape and blocked off the whole area, the alley way, the bike path, the beach, and the liquor store.

There's so much evidence that might not fly in court because of contamination, pedestrian traffic, police foot traffic, vehicles, fire department traffic. If that guy died, they wouldn't have had witness statements.

Good job not shooting the guy and giving him first aid, but do they want a conviction or just want a guy off the streets for the night? The initial contact and handling of the situation is good, but I don't think the situation was handled seriously afterwards. Maybe they just don't have enough resources to bring out C.S.I for this type of stuff. It would be worthwhile though in my estimation. Get some blood samples, who knows, one of them might be the suspect's blood.

  4. Where to start?? I know both parties involved. The kid at liquor store name is Ryan and the cave man looking dude is Joe. Joe was telling the cops 'I am not a scumbag I am just homeless. If you were quiet and listened instead of random speculating (which makes for shitty reporting) you would have heard that. Also what I wanted to hear was his answer of what he was doing but you guys babbling made it impossible to hear. He was saying where he was asleep but thanks to you talking you can't hear his answer. That would be crucial to where the attack took place. Joe is a menace in a way that he is very loud and disturbing but he is not violent unless provoked. Ryan is a known thief and drug dealer that threatens to stab and shoot people on a regular basis. The blood trail to the liquor store was from Ryan and the big puddles on the strand was where Joe stopped at Carols first then Leos for help to no avail. You obviously didn't heart that because you guys kept babbling. Both of them are lying in some form but Ryan went to jail and Joe was released from the hospital. Your footage is good but be quiet next time!! And yes, the cops here are pretty cool!
