Why is the USA Putting its Kids in Jail? | Witness | HD American Prison School Crime Documentary – Everything Law and Order Blog

It’s the only nation in the world that has not signed the International Convention on the Rights of the Child: the United States. Signing would mean relaxing legislation on the confinement of minors. Indeed, several American states still sentence minors to years, sometimes even life, in prison. The situation is worse than ever before: 70,000 minors are currently in American prisons, some in juvenile prisons, others in adult centres.

To protect them from their fellow inmates, the prison administration often keeps them in isolation for months or even years. Several cases are particularly disturbing, such as that of Khalief Browder, accused of stealing a backpack. He committed suicide after finally being released after 2 years in pre-trial detention. Our reporter gained access inside some such ‘juvies’, and met with minors in the system. In Utah, the authorities are rethinking the conditions of detaining minors. In Texas, on the other hand, the principle is simple: major crime, major penalty. No excuses.

This film reveals why so many minors end up behind bars, the main reason being the judicialization of society. Even in schools, police officers — not supervisors — now patrol the hallways. As a result, school-based misconduct has become a crime, sending students straight into the criminal system.

This documentary was produced by Nova Prod and directed by Esther Goldmann. It was first released in 2019.

  1. Ya'll should have thought about the consequences BEFORE you did the crime. It's a shame that they didn't receive any home training. Scare them straight.

  2. Children ARE NOT SUSPECTS by default like some of these schools are doing. This creates the entirely wrong atmosphere and an adversarial relationship where one might not otherwise exist or be as bad. Treat people like criminals and they will act like criminals. High school students must be trusted to get themselves to class in order to prepare for college, work, or their adult lives. Children are NOT cattle and shouldn't be herded in school by a cop with a sidearm.

  3. Stephanie before working in nightclubs, worked as Gestapo Officer in one of the famous German recreation camps in my country.
"No one cares, even about their mental ilness" – Did I only heared that? Whats that subhuman treatment? Its not like they should provide mental ill person a help, and support instead of giving him trauma of being jailed? As a person with mental disorders, anxiety attacks and PTSD I would never imagine being treated like this will help me.

  4. No other nation on earth imprisons its own citizens as much as the usa . The usa imprisons its own citizens more than the next 10 nations combined.
Small wonder the USA ranks 38th on the list of educated nations. Once in the top 5 in sciences and mathematics, the usa now sits at 38th on a list of 60 nations . Its like watching the movie Idiocracy playing out for real.
    Sad stuff indeed .
So glad I wasn't born in the usa

  5. THAT LADY STEPHANIE NOT EVEN GOING TO CALL HER A SHERIFF OR OFFICER….SHE IS ONE OF THE BEST EXAMPLES WHY PEOPLE DONT RESPECT LAW ENFORCEMENT ANYMORE ITS WRONG THIS TYPE OF TRASH NEEDS TO Be STRIPPED OF THAT BADGE AND SENT DOWN THE ROAD SHE Shouldn't BE EVEN A RENTAL COP

  6. That lady Stephanie should not be working as any kind of officer but to here how she thinks just in these few moments of showing who she is it's wrong she loves hog tying people no mercy for mentally ill people what is going on in this world smh SHE IS A BULLY and abuses her power sad

  7. We put kids in jail because the little cretins break the law. It is called accountability. I know several kids who should be in jail but are not.

  8. Shock or "scared straight" programs DO NOT work, in fact, research shows that kids who participated in these programs were more likely to commit crimes. They even found that the programs can be harmful. It is a waste of money and counterintuitive.

Also, the more I learned and watched about this sheriff, Stephanie, the more aggravated I got. I assume her heart is in the right place, but she needs to implement evidence based treatments.

  9. That is unjust, he's a kid and hit another boy over a girl, that's normal teen behavior now he will have a record that will effect the rest of his life for something he did at 16 😢

  10. Seems to me that the answer to avoiding these problems that come from being locked up is to learn to respect people and respect the rules society has to keep us out of jail. Time has shown us some kids need more intensive help, love and instructions in order to be successful in the societal as well as the maturation process and there's no shame in this fact because, obviously, everyone's life influences are not the same..😊❤

  11. This is over kill when I was in school we never had searches like that they're treating the kids like they're in prison and they've done something wrong and they have it how can I learn in that environment I would not send my child there

  12. Cant comprehend why they give so much these medicines to kids?! They getting more ill after that… it can addict them not cure !…and they r side effects…

1 thought came to my mind…in UK is different..child can "seat on your head" coz they know there is no punishment or if it's is extremely mild….lawlessness completely spread in Uk…
As an example of TRUE STORY: teens attaked a man. 1 person was caught. Was case court. As punishment judge said ( r ready guys?) : " u have to b at home 9pm. And we will send u for a training how dangerous is weapon"🤦—- now u know why is dangerous in UK.

  13. That's what teachers have to deal with daily. The question is how to better the situation when all this behavior comes from Home? What do they do it in other countries? Many kids use drugs because their family does. They can not sign the UN Convention, too many minor murderers. In the other hand Austin should of never been in jail, if he just told on his father. How come the system did not report the abuse, kids need to learn how to report the parents when abuse is going on.

  14. America is a crazy country, littered with linatics. I will never allow my kids to go through this. The solution is with their upbringing at home. Children copy their parents way of doing things.

  15. My opinion these kids were not nurtured by their parents most of them come from divorce between parents then the parent that gets custody has no time with them so they give them video games and television computer as their companions to raise them not much parenting going into these kids no deep connections No Love No parenting this is where our society has gone wrong with our kids now they're being held for their they need God in their life and their families to stay together why have children if you're not going to teach them from right and wrong it's a vicious circle everybody's caught up in their own little world and have no deep connections the devil at work more God is needed

  16. 750 of every 100,000 are locked up in the USA, land of the free by the way 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 biggest prison population on earth
