Divorce: Iranian Style (Global Documentary) | Real Stories

Hilarious, tragic, stirring, this fly-on-the-wall look at several weeks in an Iranian divorce court provides a unique window into the intimate circumstances of Iranian women’s lives. Following Jamileh, whose husband beats her; Ziba, a 16-year-old trying to divorce her 38-year-old husband; and Maryam, who is desperately fighting to gain custody of her daughters, this deadpan chronicle showcases the strength, ingenuity, and guile with which they confront biased laws, a Kafaka-esque administrative system, and their husbands’ and families’ rage to gain divorces.

With the barest of commentary, acclaimed director Kim Longinotto turns her cameras on the court and lets it tell its own story. Dispelling images of Iran as a country of war, hostages, and “fatwas”, and Iranian women as passive victims of a terrible system, this film is a subtle, fascinating look at women’s lives in a country which is little known to most Americans.

Directed by Kim Longinotto and Ziba Mir-Hosseini, author of Marriage on Trial: A Study of Islamic Family Law.

  1. I understand the whole thing about trying to save the marriage and not doing what society does now (not talking about the cases were it should happen), but what he says in the beginning to the woman, " "You must be a better wife" "You must make yourself more attractive so he will want to come back to the marriage", when the man is just staying there like – I don't care- I just dont get it! Is she the only one who needs to save the marriage? I've been reading the "holy books" for quite some time now, and it's obvious that some rules were just created by men to benefit them. Not even the Quran takes away man's responsability to maintain an harmonious marriage.

  2. Which ever country one lives… Women live of of man's money….. Going against what was taught to me at school…. Can't women live of of thier hard work ever.

  3. In some customs women's family has to pay the money as gift for marriage.
In some customs men have to pay the money as gift for marriage.
But women when they have to pay they say it is unjust. But in customs where they receive you make it as their basic right. Leeches

  4. Does anybody know, please? For real. Are any Iranian women in Iran open to the possibility of marrying a non-Iranian man? Ok you win, I really want to be with one of these beautiful creatures.

  5. Omg! Leave the house must ask husband for per permission!😂😂😂I am grateful to live in the US and married a wonderful husband who respects and supports me whatever I want to do! Thank you America and thank you to my American husband!❤❤❤

  6. The lady in the court is horrible they’re literally there to make sure the men benefits from whatever situation it is and making sure the women are pretty much the man’s slave. And how is it that the man doesn’t have to pay the gifts that they promised the women in order for them to get married but they’re forced to give up their children if they choose to say screw the money or whatever and move on. Who would choose to live a life like this not to mention they are supposed to be these super god fearing religious people but treat their women like they are not human beings. SMH what women would see this and say yes I want this for my life. Just nonsense. Oh in another thing marrying off 9 year olds and teenagers to grown men should be a crime in itself what on earth type of partnership/relationship can those children offer a grown man nobody thinks that is weird a 9 year old shouldn’t even be trusted to be left alone in the house by they’re self let along be married smh.

  7. Oh I get it now, the lady that works for the court wants the woman who's fighting to keep her children, to sacrifice her happiness for her child like she did. I guess it goes with the saying "misery loves company." She was miserable so she wants others to be miserable like her.

  8. Thank God I do not live there! The men there are disgusting and horrible because they use their physical authority over women by stripping away their rights, and treating them with so much disrespect! I do not understand a culture where the people seem to try and reason with one another but treating the women with so little regard🤷🏽‍♀️🤨😡 I feel so sorry for all the women that live there including the woman who works for the court because obviously, she was manipulated and raised to think that way. I pray for women who are subjected to such treatment, I hope that maybe one day the men of that culture will open their eyes and realize that they are victimizing the women they claim to love.

  9. The lady who works at the court should be ashamed of herself! She's a horrible person, wretched woman and she strikes me as jealous and envious she should be ashamed of herself! How would she like it if someone tried to separate her from her child? She's wretched she's filled with jealousy what else could it be she was determined to help that horrible man get the kids back knowing that he would mistreat them. I don't know if she's aware when you do dirty things toward others it comes back to you!

  10. A man boy who can't lead and complains like a woman and play victim is the most dangerous men of all.
Because they ruin the most basic of civilization, which is family, a marriage.
Cause it's clear, men are the one who has the power, cause they are the leader of the family in marriage.

Women rights in Islam: able to say no to a marriage and whom they marry to.
Many Muslims forget this. No matter what nationality.

Language teacher: prove that language is the window of the world.

  11. It’s like the judge isn’t even listening to her. Did he read the police report? Her husband said she had a phone relationship with another man and it was only her uncle and not any funny business. She has tried to compromise with him for 30 years and HE is the one who filed for divorce and she wants a divorce. But he says go home and make yourself pretty to try to tempt him back and stop the divorce? She doesn’t want him and after 30 years of trying she is way beyond finished with him. Grant the divorce.
