This story is so much like what we hear about military people returning from war zones. Re-entry is a huge challenge that the returners, their families and society generally are too often ill prepared. Perhaps there is an overlap that could potentiate this movement to change.
this will not change until our capitalist feudal system evolves in a more mutual interdependent egalitarian social system. Our money=first society is breeding this problem and problems like this in all aspects of life from individual to planet.

Prisons should be a last resort, and most sentences should be far shorter, and involve as much rehabilitation as possible. Warehousing millions of people in prison is a crime.
