I'll bet less than 1% of US drivers would know whether the car/truck they borrowed had the right license plate or not. I certainly wouldn't. "Hey, my car's in the shop and I just need to go pick up a prescription, can I borrow yours?" "Sure, no problem." "Is the registration up to date? Do you have the corrrect tags on the vehicle?" Uh – no. Won't happen. Will the owner think of it? Not if he or she doesn't realize it or think of it at that minute? If it DID happen, and everything WAS okay, the owner would probably think, "What's wrong with this guy? Does he have something to hide?" So now if my friend uses my car to drive me to the airport to save her gas, I have to give her my car's registration because she's going to drive it home and then come back to pick me up, huh? She'll look at me like I'm nuts – because nobody knows that.
