We’re back with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office — this time hitting the water with their Marine Patrol Unit. JSO
patrols over 90 square miles of waterway, from the St. Johns River out to three miles offshore in the Atlantic, with a
fleet that includes contenders, silver ships, safe boats, bay boats, jet skis, and a Dorado for shallow runs.
Detective Tim Leathers shows off his 2024 Chevrolet 3500 dually — one of the cleanest tow trucks in the fleet — before
we head out on patrol with Officer Grinnolly. We sit in on real vessel stops (slow-speed zone violations, illegal
tie-offs to critical infrastructure at JaxPort), break down maritime laws every boater needs to know, cruise past the
Jacksonville Jaguars owner’s tiny boat, and respond live to a possible body-recovery call after a 911 caller reported
two males dumping a body bag into the river.
