Thornton, Colorado  On July 16, 2025, at approximately 3:47 a.m., an officer with the Thornton Police Department requested assistance from Colorado State Patrol Troopers with a stolen Ram pickup truck that was located. Troopers were able to catch up to the Ram and attempted a grapple, but it was not successful. After an initial failed attempt to deploy the grappler, the chase spilled onto southbound I-25. There, troopers successfully latched the grappler onto the fleeing truck, but the maneuver caused both the suspect’s vehicle and the patrol car to slam into a median barrier, disabling both. The trooper was unharmed, but the suspect took off on foot before being captured by Thornton officers a short distance away.
The specialized grappler tool, mounted to the front of patrol vehicles, is gaining traction among Colorado law enforcement agencies as a safer alternative to traditional pursuit tactics. According to CSP, the grapplers has been deployed about 120 times for a variety of crimes, and while Wednesday’s incident led to a crash, officials maintain the tool minimizes risks to both officers and the public. “It helps us avoid dangerous maneuvers like PIT techniques,†said CSP Sgt. Ivan Alvarado. The use of the grappler temporarily shut down all southbound lanes of I-25, which were fully reopened by 5:20 a.m. as the investigation continued.

The grappler needs to be standard equipment on all police vehicles nationwide. Also mandatory 15 years added to sentence for fleeing.

I'm a fan of the grappler but the cost to use at such speeds doesn't make sense. Rather pit.
This is exactly what I expected to happen when one of these idiotic ideas actually got used. Sounds like the cop learned his lesson though.
I'm sure the vehicle owner and his insurance company were very happy about this, too. The best part is the fact that despite getting caught, the guy who stole it will likely be out tomorrow to do it again, and even once he's convicted it'll only be a few years before he does it some more.
And yet, he fled.

Theft coverage on your car doesn't always cover your car if it was wrecked during a pursuit. Co-worker had their civic stolen and crashed during a pursuit and his insurance told him to go after the police department insurance for damages.

Tool design ~ it's up there with grenades in WW11 that had a super sticky compound so you could attach it like Velcro to clothing and packs but also stuck to hands.

That's the double edged sword with that grappler. Heavy vehicles will pull hard when they lose traction and that will cause the police vehicle to also lose traction just like in this video. The good ole PIT/TVI is best way to end pursuits..well that and spike strips. The grappler is good for low speeds though.
