  2. I did the math, about 1.35 seconds from the car behind clearly visable to the impact.. Human reaction time to visualy see the car is .25 seconds. So 1 second to react.. by the time you press the breaks its about .95 seconds to slow down. I measured distance and time, the officer was going approx 65 mph, you need 225 feet to stop. From the time of the car being clearly visble to time of impact is about 130 feet, barely half of the distance required to stop. Turning would have onlt caused further damage and probably killed other bystanders due to sliding out of control.

  3. Why is everyone blaming the old geezer, cop had more than enough time to stop or honk his horn even more. They can’t be hauling butt just because they have lights and sirens

  4. Looks like 20 something guys driving to fast in a residential neighborhood and not paying attention. I believe there should be a law to stop the drive as fast as you want from a police officer. Double the speed limit is just stupid. What if it was a kid on a bike.

  5. 3 seconds from car entering lane until impact… Cop should have done something in that time to mitigate impact.
I’m “pro police” but it looks like he didn’t react until impact, which means they froze or were distracted. My guess is both were distracted.

  6. Remember, folks, you look LEFT, RIGHT, then LEFT, again… and keep looking forward as you enter the lane. That way you have your peripherals to guide you…just in case something comes outta nowhere. Not that this cop came out of nowhere. lights. sirens… plenty of time to stop from the person entering the lane.
when crossing the road or pulling out into traffic….people..ffs… LOOK!!!

  7. Police officer had time to hit brakes and move to the right. His driving looked very relaxed for running code3. Heads need to be on swivels running code, worst part? He had a second set of eyes with him who proved just as useless. Just looked to comfortable and relaxed imo. Sucks for the person who died due to their poor situational awareness. Not trying to pile on, just the fact that there are 2 officers and nobody reacted is odd. If the car had pulled out right on top of them that might be a different story.

Many people are hard of hearing, not just the elderly. Have some audio going on also, it becomes impossible to hear sirens.

  8. – the police car was going at an extremely high rate of speed. (likely around two times the speed limit)
    – the police car did have its lights and sirens activated
    – the driver of the police car appears to be distracted since they didn't react until less than a second before the collision

    – the honda appears to have either ran the stop sign or committed to the turn without confirming the road was clear.
    – the driver of the honda likely didn't hear the sirens due to age or see the lights from the police car due to the cars parked on the side of the road

both sides made mistakes that led to this tragic accident but it's likely the honda would be found at fault here since the police vehicle had its lights and sirens activated and the honda also didn't confirm the road was clear for them. that said, if the driver of the police car wasn't distracted, even a second of braking and/or a swerve to the right could have lessened the impact and changed the location of it or the collision could have been completely avoided.

  9. Everyone harping on the cop not braking/reacting. It was under 3 seconds between car rolling out into the road and the collision. 1.5 seconds to react. 1.5 seconds tops of braking isn’t gonna change this outcome.
Accidents happen all the time. Vehicular deaths double that of firearm deaths.
Just a very shitty unfortunate situation.

  10. What a pos cop.

Also a ton of idiotics in these comments too.
Newsflash, at those speeds, people can only hear your sirens for about a second before the cop car reaches them. Outrunning your sirens is extremely real, and this cop driving that way is EXTREMELY reckless.

But don't worry, I'm sure even though LAPD has policies that limit response speed, this cop will be "cleared of any wrongdoing" despite doing over double the speed limit.

  11. As a retired police officer (26+ years) and former traffic crash investigator (12.5 years & over 200 traffic fatality crash investigations), I am able to share that the typical perception-reaction time is 1.5 seconds. Perception-reaction time is perceiving a stimuli with one or more of one’s senses (in this case car pulling out of side street for the officer) and reacting to do something in response. From the dashcam video, I counted about 2 seconds from when I first see the Honda pull forward into the path of the oncoming police vehicle to impact. From the body cam video, it’s about .5 seconds from the moment the officer driving reacts to what he perceives with steering input. He probably simultaneously is slamming on the brakes. For the officer, this crash is unpreventable. Before impact, I pretty much knew it would be fatal for the Honda driver regardless of airbags and seatbelt. The (what’s called) Delta V, or change in velocity over time measured in milliseconds, is the significant factor for survivability in a crash. RIP to the Honda driver.

  12. Some American police assume that as long as they have their sirens on, all people will stop. Three seconds from the time they recognize the car to the time they hit it, and they don't even slow down, let alone brake.

  13. Maybe the cop could not have avoided the crash, but he had time to at least brake or swerve. No reason for him to be distracted, he had a partner to handle everything but the driving.
