The Texas man accused of sexually abusing many of his adopted sons appeared in court Wednesday to hear the allegations made against him. Thirty-eight-year-old Hayim Nissim Cohen, born Jeffrey Lujan Vejil, was arrested and charged in February after one of his adopted children, a 17-year-old, spoke about the abuse on a podcast. Shortly after, five of Cohen’s other adopted kids came forward with their own allegations of abuse. The self-proclaimed Rabbi’s 22-year-old son defended the father of nine, claiming his brother who broke the initial allegations suffers from cognitive issues. Various Jewish groups have also criticized Cohen’s Rabbi claim and conversion to Orthodox Judaism, stating he doesn’t speak one word of Hebrew or Yiddish. Cohen’s case continues as he faces 12 charges in connection to these alleged crimes.

At least one of his adoptive sons told investigators that his father only uses his wheelchair when other people are around and that he has six oxygen tanks he does not use, according to court records. The child also told investigators that he coughs uncontrollably only when he is in court.
Detective Miguel Guerra wasn’t a good witness. His answers waivered. It was as if he didn’t understand the questions.
