The separation between the "smartest" state and the "dumbest" state is small and the ranking criteria is based more on academic achievement (degrees earned) than test score. Underachievement can be due to economics; Alabama has a higher percentage of poverty than most. BTW, I have a degree in engineering and my spouse is an MD.
