Columbus, Ohio — Columbus Division of Police and city officials released body camera footage after an officer fatally shot a 20-year-old man within seconds of encountering him while attempting to serve an arrest warrant earlier that day. The footage was publicly revealed Tuesday afternoon, hours after the shooting, in a media briefing attended by Mayor Andrew Ginther.

On August 30, 2022, Columbus K-9 officer Ricky Anderson and other officers went to an apartment building in the 3200 block of Sullivant Avenue to serve a warrant. Officers took two people who answered the door into custody, then searched the apartment with a K-9. During the search, officer Anderson fired a single shot at 20-year-old Donovan Lewis after he raised his hand with something in it, which appeared to be a vape pen. Lewis was carried from the apartment and was rendered medical aid by officers applying what appears to be a trauma bandage and performing CPR. Lewis died at Grant Medical Center. He had outstanding warrants for domestic violence, assault and improperly handling a firearm.

  1. That cop needs to be charged. Reckless use of a firearm AT THE LEAST! & they still have the nerve to say “STOP RESISTING” like he just got shot dumbass!

  2. Looks like instead of turning his weapon light on he accidentally pulled on the trigger 🤷🏼‍♂️

  3. I think he had a remote control in his hand and the cop thought it was a gun. That shot also looked too quick to be one of wise judgement.

  4. He shot awfully fast. I’d like to give the cops the benefit of the doubt here but it’s kinda hard in this case.

  5. I mean only a dumbass would lift a black vape in that moment, he had a thousand chances to at least say something his plan was to just sleep until the worst time

  6. Hey cops wearing body cams. Maybe stop acting like clowns when you’re on duty. Burping and doing funny knocks sure makes it look way worse when one of you screws up and takes someone’s life.

  7. Lawsuit. I agree we need cops. But happy triggers maybe not so much. Sure he was hiding. But was he too buzzed up? Who knows. I like how he talks for the body cam.
