Earl Smith (“Kareem”) is convicted of murder and must serve life in prison.

He robbed a restaurant when he was 22 and killed someone working there. While in prison in Hard Time he turned to the gang-life, which he now left behind because he converted to Islam. Earl “Kareem” Smith’s religious group has had clashes with gangs within the prison. And he makes clear that he and his followers do not turn the other cheek.
