Ohio Trooper Rams Wrong-Way Driver on I-71

On October 7, 2017 at approximately 6:18 a.m. Ohio State Highway Patrol Sergeant Robert Burd responded to reports of a wrong-way driver on Interstate 71 in Greene County. Another officer had already located the vehicle and himself narrowly avoided a head-on collision, and Burd was en route to assist.

Sgt. Burd entered I-71 northbound near milepost 58 and immediately began slowing northbound traffic behind him. Observing the wrong-way vehicle coming toward him in the number one lane, Sgt. Burd began flashing his spotlight at the vehicle in an attempt to signal its driver to stop.

As the vehicle approached, however, its driver accelerated and attempted to pass him on the left. Burd, knowing the danger and potential consequences of allowing the vehicle to pass him, steered into the path of the wrong-way vehicle and intentionally accelerated into it.

When that contact failed to disable the wrong-way vehicle, Sgt. Burd immediately turned around and struck the vehicle a second time, attempting to force it into the median. The wrong-way driver again accelerated, this time spinning around the front of Burd’s cruiser. The driver tried to avoid Burd, drove across the median, and attempted to continue in the wrong direction.

Sgt. Burd crossed the median, got ahead of the vehicle and attempted to cut it off. Not ready to give up, the vehicle accelerated and rammed into the front-left of Burd’s cruiser, pushing the vehicle sideways. As the suspect driver continued to attempt to accelerate, spinning and smoking his tires, Burd exited his patrol vehicle, pulled the driver from the vehicle…. and…. discovered that the guy was 79 years old and suffering from dementia.

The driver was transported to the hospital and was cited for reckless operation of a motor vehicle; Sergeant Burd received an award.

  1. dementia is super interesting, you lose random things. guy knew how to drive a truck pretty well, just didnt know how to drive it legally

  2. That last move of cutting in front of him instead of your natural instinct of following was really impressive. Well played mr officer! 👍

  3. in ohio we only care about one thing on the road. if theres enough clearance we will just drive right through

  4. Damn this job looks like it sucks. Only true hero’s would take these hits… thanks cops for risking your lives to save ours. God bless.

  5. It seems like I see a lot of videos of the Ohio State Patrol in pursuits and/or making contact with people… either the ratio of pursuits per capita is really high in Ohio or they’re really good about releasing videos.. either way.. you’d think they would start buying some bumper to protect their cars as often as they use em 😂😂 great work men! Back the blue!!

  6. I know he has dementia, which is awful and I hope he gets help, but I'm curious to know what he thought was happening as police cars were chasing him, ramming him and he was still trying to get away *on the wrong side of the highway*? I mean, he was aware enough to drive pretty well and be making choices, like "ram that police car" and "cross the median." What was the scenario as he saw it?

  7. Living in Ohio, one thing bothers me. The wrong way driver had blood on his cheek as he comes into dashcam view. Ohio State Patrol needs to start using bodycams.

  8. My Grandmother passed away from alzheimers, it started as dementia (it was a sad 10 years). I feel terrible for both parties involved here. God bless them both.

  9. God love the OSP. Too often denigrated and not appreciated. I wish every cop in ohio was as professional as an Ohio Trooper.

  10. This video brought to mind how law enforcement has gone from disabling vehicles to disabling the driver. They used to shoot the tires, the engine, but now they prefer to shoot the driver.
    Sick

  11. People who suffers from dementia has no business driving on the road whatsoever! Revoke their licence and impound their car before they kill someone!! Thank god for Sergeant Robert Burd for preventing a disaster on the highway!!

  12. I called 911 on a “drunk” driver that I was following. He kept crossing the center line. When the highway patrol finally stopped him he wasn’t drunk but suffered from macular degeneration and couldn’t see. He was just as dangerous as a drunk driver. I was disappointed that neither he a member of his family hadn’t made the decision to stop driving.

  13. That cop hitting him was bullshit the guy needed to be stopped but how do you inow if its a medical condition or not theae cops need to go back to school hell the guy should have ramed the cop head on ig thats how there where going to Act

  14. Nice the way the passing traffic slows for Officer Safety…. People are really that STUPID!!!! Great Job Blue. Stay Safe.
