Marco Hides From Police in Closet, Gets Pepper Sprayed

On June 20, 2016* at about 3:40 P.M., Officer Chris Rodgers of the Sedro-Woolley Police Department was dispatched to a report of a domestic disturbance involving Marco Garcia, who was known to the police to be a drug user and convicted felon. At the time of the call, Garcia had an unconfirmed no-bail felony warrant for bail jumping, possession of a controlled substance, and resisting arrest.

En route to the call, Officer Rodgers called for backup. Garcia had fought police is the past and Rodgers figured that it might happen again. Upon arriving, Officer Rodgers asked one of Garcia’s kids “Where’s daddy?” and she replied “Daddy’s in the bedroom,” pointing toward what police described as “the same closet that Garcia used to hide in” on other occasions. After ordering Garcia out of the closet multiple times, Officer Rodgers deployed one burst of OC spray onto Garcia’s face.

Rodgers would later write “I immediately felt blowback from the spray on my face as I backed out of the closet. The man that came out of the closet fit the physical description of Garcia, he was later identified as Garcia. He was taken into custody on the floor of the bedroom by myself and Officer Eddy. He was handcuffed and walked out of the house.”

“Aid was called to decontaminate Garcia. He was not very compliant with officers or the aid crew. Garcia was transported to Skagit County Jail on his warrants and charged with resisting arrest.”

*Yeah, yeah, old news — you haven’t seen it before ✌️

  1. A number of people have left comments and sent messages informing us that Marco Garcia's full name is present in this video. In this case, inclusion of the arrestee's full name was intentional.

In the future, if you ever believe that we have missed a redaction please don't draw attention to it by commenting about it. On an average day this channel receives between 3,000 and 10,000+ new comments, which means the chances are good that your comment will only be seen by people who can't do anything about it.

Instead, send an email to privacyATrealworldpolicedotcom. Please include a link to the video (or its title) and a time stamp. We prioritize review of privacy-related emails. Someone will evaluate the alleged missed redaction without delay and will take whatever action is appropriate. Regrettably, we don't have the capacity to respond to all emails. Know, however, that they are all read, and that when they raise a potential issue we take it seriously. Although it probably does not seem that way to video subjects, Real World Police is committed to ethical journalism. Minimizing harm is a constant consideration.

    Thank you for your help!

  2. its making me nervous that the cop keeps telling all the other cops that his body cam is on… its like hes making sure everyone behaves while recording

  3. Makes me think of when my dog shits in the house, and she hides because she knows she did a bad thing, and won't come out no matter how much I call her name, so I have to drag her out.

  4. Now if all police officers were as professional as this guy then the respect for the police would go through the roof……

  5. I'm in no way an expert about OC spray, but the conversations in this video and in comments indicate that water burns as it's washing the OC out. The paramedic asked for saline, which is simply salty water, so I guess that would still burn too. Milk was mentioned too, which I assume works in the same way that yoghurt does with spicy food.

Given all this this, I'm surprised no one has invented a single dose packet that police, fire/paramedics could carry with them to help counteract the effects of OC spray, not only for the recipient, but for the officers and bystanders who might receive unintentional back spray.

It would seem both common sense and a duty of care to have something like that available for officers so they can return to full function as soon as possible. Surely that correlates to better control of situations and therefore safety and performance?

  6. This cop is a shining example of how a good cop should carry himself. He is protecting and serving. Even to the knucklehead, who is still a human being.

  7. It has to suck only getting a water bottle. When i got sprayed in training I had to waterboard myself with a garden hose for about 2 hours while rubbing baby soap into my eyes😂😂

  8. How telling it is that this gang member who allegedly beats a woman and terrorizes his kids is found hiding in a closet like a scared little mouse and acts like a toddler when sprayed w/ a bit of pepper spray. Not so badass now are you!!

  9. He stops for a minute to say Hey! That’s my Homie! This guy is a piece of work. Who takes it this far with your kids around and the kids have to live where you made them pepper spray you? Marco cares about Marco

  10. They were FAR too kind to this moron! He thinks he's a badboy. Badboys don't hide in the closet, and cry like babies when they get pepper sprayed! Did he really think they weren't gonna find him?! Silly me… does he think at all?
