Dashcam video shows a driver running from a multi-car crash that ended a brief police chase Wednesday in Richmond Heights. Investigators are still searching for the driver who sped away after an officer tried to stop a 2017 Kia Sorrento. The driver caused the crash when he ran a red light on Highland Road at Richmond Road. The chase lasted about 20 seconds, according to video released Thursday afternoon by the Richmond Heights Police Department. Richmond Heights officers arrested a passenger who tried to run from the crash. They found a loaded Glock 26 9 mm, Percocet pills and approximately $3,000 in the car, Chief Gene Rowe said.

Kevin Anthony Carswell, 28, of Cleveland is charged with aggravated trafficking in drugs, resisting arrest, drug paraphernalia possession and having a weapon while under disability in the incident. His court appearance has not yet been scheduled. The Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office and Euclid Police Department have active warrants accusing Carswell of drug trafficking, Rowe said. Carswell, who owns the Kia, told police he does not know the man who was driving his SUV, Rowe said. The Kia nearly crashed head-on into a police SUV just before 9 p.m. on Richmond Park East.

The officer turned around and tried to stop the Kia on Highland Road before the driver ran a red light and crashed into a BMW 228i. The Kia hit two more cars before coming to a stop. The BMW’s driver suffered serious injuries and received treatment at Hillcrest Hospital. His condition is unknown, Rowe said. The driver of a Chevrolet Malibu involved in the crash also received medical treatment but has been released from a hospital, Rowe said. The officer who pursued the Kia had just contacted a supervisor to report the chase when the Kia hit the BMW, Rowe said. “The officer really didn’t have an opportunity to say he was in pursuit,” he said. “The whole chase probably covered three-tenths of a mile.”

  1. This just in: Officials overwhelmed with number of volunteers willing to ‘flip the switch.’

I would cut in that line!
