2. The habit you came up with seems too convoluted imo. Why not just develop the habit of checking for your firearm before stepping into your car? I know this is moot now that you're retired, but was just some food for thought.

9. Mike don't feel bad about forgetting your weapons. Everyone makes mistakes. Once I went to school it gets to lunchtime I go to grab my lunchbox but I realise I forgot it at home and had to go on without my lunch.

11. I'll do you one better Mike. After putting my arrestee in lock up got a call of multiple car wreck on the bridge between Lewiston, ID and Clarkston, WA. I responded and forgot my gun. Bad part was local news team did too and there I was on the 5 o'clock news sans my S&W 686. Got a call from the Sheriff that evening and a 3 day unpaid vacation.

12. Went to arrest a felony suspect at 0600hrs, by myself. Knocked on his apartment door n realized my Glock was sleeping in my safe. Good thing I had my Kel Tex .32 on my ankle.

15. Had something like that happen to me back in the 90's. I got dressed for work and drove the 20 minutes to the station to only realize I left my Sig on the bed. Had to turn around and go home to get it. I heard about that one for about 2 weeks. Answering a call for a dog barking and my partner asks me "Jerry you sure you have your weapon?" This went on and on. My father was the chief and even he got in on it. I fell your pain Mike.

I can appreciate these stories (and the balls to put it out there)…I was an ammo tech in the Marines…I was 17 in Japan, delivering a 5 ton Truck full of assorted explosives, to a Force Recon Company…Old Crusty ass Jarheads. I get off the Vehicle after unloading it…sat on an ammo crate of 40mm Grenades and lit up a smoke ( COMPLETELY not thinking). There are 50 Marines around and me and the Dricver were the only non NCO's, everyone else was a Ssgt or above. This one Gunny turns around and notices my epic stupidity, starting in a conversational tone "Marine, would you ever so kindly mind" and in the loudest booming voice I have ever heard "NOT SMOKING ON THE FUCKING EXPLOSIVES!!!!" Ya…Felt pretty freaking stupid as EVERYONE turned and GLARED at me….Be Safe, Stay Healthy…Semper Fi

17. I actually work at a repair shop and we do a lot of police cars ,one day I went to park one of the officers personal cars and open the glove box to put the key in there and there was a gun lolololol when I told the other cops in the booth 😂 they all rag on him now lololol

20. I give you much credit for admitting that a cop can make a mistake and that you made a mistake. Kudos.

21. Forgetting your sidearm ? That a very uncomfortable feeling.

22. I worked for a municipality and normally when we make an arrest we would transport the suspect to county jail and I would leave my firearm in the patrol car. In certain circumstances we did house suspects at our own jail and I had to place my firearm in a locker. There had been at least two different circumstances that after booking someone in I had a call and left with my firearm still in the locker. This is probably the worst feeling every once you realize that you have made this mistake.

25. way to be humble. It's a very rare trait in life. Own up to your own mistakes. life lesson learned. My worst mistake "some product gets burned" "yours somebody gets shot in the face 5 times" I don't judge. still got your back

26. If that's the worse thing you do as a cop, I can live with it. Sooooo, what would you do if you saw a fellow cop do something illegal, or even immoral? Like excessive force?

28. @Mike The Cop This has nothing to do with the subject, but it interests me anyway. Couldn't you have taken the backup gun out of the trunk, or would that be against department rules, or didn't you have one?

29. i think i found a good solution: don't make cops take their guns off.

30. Obviously my job isn't as dangerous as yours, Mike, since my danger is other drivers and heavy parcels, but I once left my keys for the van in the back of the van and shut the door on them. Had to call up and embarrassingly explain they needed to send someone with another set of keys (All the back doors have the same lock). Now I've formed the habit of putting them in my back pocket so I can feel where they are when I sit on the van and have a smoke.
