2. Whoever scripted and narrated this episode on roman polanski is so clearly uninformed and is basing there opinions on incomplete information. Roman is correct that there is a collective hysteria going on – by that, i mean that everyone in a public position is so concerned with their image and every organization in a public position is so concerned by the possibility of a lawsuit, that they take very extreme positions on things to placate the public view – which is forever shifting.

   Obviously giving drugs to the 13 year old girl and having sex with her was the wrong thing to do. I am not suggesting orherwise. That said, given everything I know about the man, he is far from the kind of rapist or sexual predator that he is being depicted as.

   When this whole situation occurred the girl was 2 weeks shy of her 14th birthday. Roman had just breaking off a multi-year relationship with a girl who was 15 years old girl who he’s stayed close friends with for his whole life. He also became friends with the man that 15 year old girl ended up marrying and knows her children. They clearly care a great deal about eachother as friends despite the fact that their relationship didnt work out or the fact that she was 15 and he was in his 40s at the time that they dated. During the time they dated they were often photographed out together drinking wine – and my guess is they were also sharing some of his quaaludes since he was popping them all the time at that stage in his life.
   However, in Europe, this behavior was not even considered eyebrow raising – forget about being worth of incarceration or dubbed a life long rapist. Roman also met his wife, who he has now been with for almost 35 years (married for 30 of those years), when she was a teenager. We in America tend to think of an older powerful man becoming involved with a girl that age as strictly exploitative and originating from a place where the man only wants one thing – sex – and “uses” the girl that is involved. I think its very clear that roman did not approach these women that way but approached them just as people irrespective of their age. If he was a perverted pedophile one would think he wouldnt have stayed with his wife and kept a low profile and out of the pants of other children as she aged into a middle aged woman whom he clearly adores if you see any footage at all of them together – the health and strength of their relationship is also clear when you watch her defend or speak about her husband.

   I think its important context to remember that not only was Roman not american – until he was almost 30 years old he did not even speak english. He first came to the united states in 1967-8 with his then wife Sharon to direct a film and he was 34 years old. In march of 1969 he moved back to Europe to direct another film and didnt come back to the united states again until August 1969 when his 8 and a half month pregnant wife Sharon, who returned from europe before him, was murdered. After only stayed in the US for as long as it took her killers to be arrested, then returned to europe until he came back to direct chinatown. I think most if not all of mcbeth was filmed in europe – do not quote me on that but I believe I read that from a few legitimate sources. That means that in this mans entire life, he had spent maybe 1.5 years in the united states, if you piece together all the times he was here. At 43 when he “raped” this girl, it is safe to say his orientation and thinking about the world was really that of a European and not an american.

   I think its also important to note that since his wife and son were murdered roman began a prescription drug problem with quaaludes and was reportedly not completely lucid again for almost 20 years, when the police arrested him for this rape apparently all he cared about was getting to his quaaludes. This is also probably not his fault since the doctors had to drug him up to transport him to the US after his wifes death and then he was never in the right mental state to take off of the drugs, or at least not until after hed fled the country.

   Romans mother was taken to a concentration camp when he was a child living in a polish ghetto that his family was stuck in by nazi’s, where she died in a gas chamber. His dad was also taken to a concentration camp and so was his sister – leaving him all alone in the world as a 8 or 9 year old boy. He lived in random homes, had absolutely no education from elementary school until he got into film school as an adult. He taught himself to read, to write, and he lived with no parents there to care for his basic needs – so to call him entitled and a typical entitled white man just feels like a stretch to me. His father and sister it turns out were not killed in their concentration camps but romans childhood was over by the time he learned this or heard from them again. His wife sharon was his only family in the world, she was 8.5 months pregnant with his son, and she was killed in one of the most horrific ways imaginable just a week before romans birthday. If u watch any footage from this period in his life it is so clear how devastated he is. To have had the only important women in his life up until that time slaughtered in such a violent manner and seeing how gentle and sincere and just broken he was after his wifes death – i struggle to imagine he could be the violent rapist the media portrays him as. After his wife died he gave away everything they owned – his Ferrari to sharons father, the rolls royce he bought sharon for her birthday, and sharons entire estate he signed over to her parents saying he didnt want it. He put up a reward for information leading to the arrest of her killer and he along with sharons parents were sued by the man who owned the home sharon was slaughtered in, for the damages sustained to the home from the murder (I.E, blood – broken glass/doors).

   No one is saying what he did to that girl was right. I think its clear he knew how old she was and that this was an illegal thing to do in the united states – However, i highly doubt he understood how illegal it was or that it would result in his potentially going to prison, i dont think it was his intention to just exploit her, i think he was genuinely interested in her and may have started dating her in his mind had he not been arrested the following morning – just like he started dating other teenage girls before and after her, including the one he married, and i think the drugs he was on and his need to be constantly fucked up to get through the day because his life had been so tragic and he was so alone in life ended up impairing his ability to accurately interpret or even hear the response from the girl to his advances. She said herself she was sort of doing what he asked and i truly do not think he understood she was complying because she felt trapped by him. I also think he offered her quaaludes and champagne because he was planning to drink and take quaaludes and just wanted it to be a fun night for the two of them. I think he saw her in his mind the way most adult men would see a jacuzzi photo shoot with a 30 year old model, just as an opportunity and some fun that would probably go no where after that night but who knows.

   Im not saying it was correct. Im saying the guys been through a lot in his life. The girl he “raped” has been begging the court to drop the charges for over a decade and even at the time he fled she was telling the courts on record she did not think he should go to jail. The girl he “raped” said it was awful the academy expelled him and insulting to him to have associated him with bill cosby. Thats the opinion of his victim. He doesnt deserve all this bullshit its horrible this is happening to him at the end of his life
